Wesley D. Powell, DDS, MS, PC
Board Certified Pediatric Dentist
In accordance with the American Association of Orthodontists, Dr. Powell, our pediatric dentist in Atlanta, GA, recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation once they reach the age of seven. With early evaluation and diagnosis, children can achieve optimal orthodontic results. Our pediatric dentist office is home to a clinic that provides a wide range of orthodontic services and stresses early intervention and prevention.
Orthodontic treatment is available to patients of all ages. Our primary focus is on younger children and teens. Early treatment provides a range of benefits and often means that a patient can avoid surgery or other serious orthodontic complications later in life.
Children's Orthodontic Solutions
Crooked or crowded teeth or a misaligned jaw can be noticed in your child as they grow. These problems may be caused by early tooth loss, lack of space for erupting teeth, thumb sucking and more. If you notice any of these in your child’s teeth please contact our office for an orthodontic evaluation.
Our office specializes in getting the teeth aligned by using orthodontic appliances that provide solutions to alignment problems. These appliances include brackets, wires, bands, rubber bands, retainers, head gear, and more.
One of the most common solutions offered are braces. These can straighten teeth and correct wrongly positioned bites. Braces, brackets, and retainers work by placing pressure to the teeth and jaws, and facilitate movement into the right direction and putting them into the right positions for a healthier and beautiful smile.
Common Orthodontic Emergencies:
How to Deal with Them
Once your child has started wearing braces, patterns in his or her diet may change at first, but as soon as your child gets used to it, the normal diet pattern will return. In the course of wearing braces, there are instances when the wires become loose, brackets are detached, and discomfort is experienced. Below are some common orthodontic problems and solutions:
Loose band or bracket
If a band or bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and if it is uncomfortable, place wax on it. If the band comes out completely, save it and bring it into the office.
Try to place the wire back in place with tweezers. If that is not possible, clip the wire with a cuticle clipper behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. Always clean the clipper with alcohol and water prior to using. Visit the dentist as soon as possible for proper fixing and alignment.
Try to push the wire down with a spoon or eraser, if that is not possible, place wax on it or if possible, cut the sharp end with a clean sterilized cuticle clipper.
If the appliance is sticking or poking, placing wax on it is one solution. If a band has slipped off a tooth, try to gently but firmly push it back on to the tooth. Call the office to schedule a time to have the appliance re-cemented by our pediatric dentist.
We advise parents to use Ibuprofen (Advil® or Motrin®) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) to provide treatment for soreness. If soreness persists, visit the clinic and let the dentist check on it.
Why Choose Our Pediatric Dental
Office for your Orthodontic needs?
One advantage of having Dr. Powell for your child’s dental health is that we monitor their growth and development on a regular basis as well as their hygiene and overall gingival health. Our parents truly appreciate having orthodontic treatment done in our office. This allows them to coordinate cleaning and check-up visits, and restorative treatments with orthodontic appointments while knowing that our staff is monitoring their children’s oral health throughout the entire process of having braces.
Studies have shown that people who have straight teeth are more likely to smile more. This leads to a greater self-esteem, which may lead to a more fulfilling life. By working with the natural growth, instead of against it, we can prevent problems from becoming worse, and give your child a healthy smile.
