When Is Sedation Dentistry Applied?

When pain is too much

Patients with dental phobia, low pain tolerance, physical handicaps or strong gag reflexes may require sedation. This procedure is also most appropriate for patients with fear or anxiety that is preventing them from going to the dentist. If your child has a low pain threshold, has very sensitive teeth, or cannot sit still on the dentist’s chair, sedation may be the best choice for your child.

When treatment is too complex

Sometimes, sedation is needed when there is a significant amount of oral and dental work to be done, such as oral surgeries. Procedures like fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions, cosmetic procedures and periodontal treatments often require sedation.

Our Sedation Dentistry Services

Small procedures in cooperative children can often be done under local anesthesia with or without nitrous oxide. The most common form of sedation our clinic uses is nitrous oxide or laughing gas. This is given through a small breathing mask which is placed over the child’s nose and the child is usually awake the entire appointment but is much more relaxed and comfortable.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes this technique as a very safe and effective technique to help relax your child during treatment.

Slightly more involved procedures in certain children will require the use of an oral medication along with nitrous oxide to help relax your child and facilitate cooperation with the procedure. These procedures are scheduled carefully and we require your child to be fasting in the morning of the procedure, and also be free of any respiratory symptoms in the two weeks before the procedure. Often we ask that two adults be present so that one is able to sit in the back seat with your child on the drive home. Most patients walk out of their appointments that day and are back in school the following day for minimal time away from school.

For more complex or lengthy dental procedures, or for children with dental fears or special needs, IV Sedation Dentistry may be the best choice. Usually we are able to complete all of the necessary treatment in one appointment. Our on-staff Pediatric Anesthesiologist (MD) will administer and monitor your child’s sedation during the entire procedure to ensure the utmost safety for your child. Our patients typically don’t remember the procedures and usually walk out of our office upon discharge! This is yet another safe, but highly effective way we can provide necessary pediatric dental care to our patients.
