Common Pediatric Dental Problems
The beginning of a healthy set of teeth throughout one’s life is taking care of primary or baby teeth. It is very important to maintain the health of primary teeth as early as they appear. Neglected cavities can cause pain and infection, and it can also lead to problems which affect the developing permanent teeth. Baby teeth are used for proper chewing and eating, providing space for permanent teeth and guiding them into position, and permitting normal development of the jaw bones and muscles.
But what if your child suddenly experienced tooth aches? What he or she sustained trauma or has knocked out some permanent teeth? Questions like these are answered and treated by our team.
Toothaches may be caused by infected gums, tooth decay, tooth fracture, dental trauma, or a damage filling. It is important to provide home remedies right after experiencing the pain. Consult with one of our Dentists or call the office immediately if the face is swollen or the pain still persists.
Bitten Tongue, Lip or Cheek
This problem may arise while your child plays, runs around or communicates with playmates and is common after receiving dental anesthesia. It is important to know what to do right after it happens. We advise to apply ice to bruised areas and apply firm pressure with a clean gauze or cloth if there is bleeding. Also it may be necessary to eat soft foods and avoid spicy or acidic foods until the area heals. Over the counter pain medications such as children’s motrin can also help. If the problem persists please call our office for an appointment.
Knocked Out Permanent Tooth
Permanent teeth may accidentally be knocked out while playing or performing some daily tasks or playing sports. Time is a critical factor in saving the tooth. Place the tooth in whole milk or Save a Tooth Solution if available and call our office immediately.

Sedation can range from the use of nitrous oxide to calm a patient to general anesthetics used to put patients to sleep. Patients with dental phobia, low pain tolerance, major dental treatment, physical handicaps or strong gag reflexes may require sedation. Procedures such as fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions, cosmetic procedures and periodontal treatments often require sedation.
Orthodontic treatment is available to patients of all ages. In accordance with the American Association of Orthodontists, we recommend that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. With early evaluation and diagnosis, children can achieve optimal orthodontic results. Early treatment provides a range of benefits and often means that a patient can avoid surgery or other serious complications.
This includes children’s fillings, crowns and prosthesis, including treatment of the often devastating nursing bottle decay. Dr. Powell and his Pediatric Dental team are committed to discussing all options before these procedures and answering all questions you may have. We are always working for the goal of your child’s healthy, beautiful smile.
While our goal is to prevent dental emergencies, we understand that the need for urgent dental care is sometimes necessary and can be a stressful experience for both parents and children. We strive to handle dental emergencies promptly and with compassion.
Our mission is to provide all of the educational tools necessary for our patients to enjoy a cavity-free future. Educating parents and their kids on dental care is our passion. These educational tools are not only about the practice, it is also about dental education. Our Pediatric Dental office provides education for parents and kids, informing them about dental health, diseases, treatment, prevention and care. As a local spokesperson for Colgate, Dr. Powell is pleased to share this experiences and knowledge to parents and children on keeping the teeth working at their best.
Preventive Oral Hygiene Instruction
This includes proper brushing, flossing and eating habits, ideal fluoride levels and the use of pit and fissure sealants. We strive to provide a fun, educational environment where children learn about the importance of good dental hygiene.
What Makes Our Pediatric Dentistry Service Unique?
A pediatric patient not only has a different dentition than adults but children may have specific dental needs that are unique among them. These needs include dental sealants, fluoride applications or home treatments, or simply education in oral hygiene.
